Passive House Accreditation for Harmony Timber Frame
We are proud to announce, and would like to congratulate our Timber Frame colleague, Ryan Gonesh, who has been accredited with the Passive House Consultant Award.
Ryan has undertaken and successfully passed the Passive House Accreditation to become a Passive House Consultant. We are now working towards obtaining our Passive House Component accreditation. Ryan is excited to be venturing into this emerging technology and is eagerly awaiting more clients to work closely with on their projects.
So what is ‘Passive House’?
Passive House is an energy performance standard that is quickly becoming the standard benchmark for energy efficiency within the construction industry. Passive House Timber Frame systems look at a few key factors to achieve Passive House standard. These key factors are:
- U-Value – Measuring how effective a material is as an insulator.
- Thermal Bridging – How various materials transfer heat from one area to another.
- Airtightness – How thermal gains are lost by the infiltration of cold air from outside of the building.
- Internal Surface Temperature – How maintaining a constant temperature on the inside surfaces of the building maintains the overall temperature of the building.
Passive house sets strict guidelines and targets that, when combined, can significantly reduce the energy demand of the building and therefore reduce household energy expenditure. No matter the climate or geographical region, Passive Houses stay at a comfortable temperature all year round with minimal energy inputs. Such buildings are heated ‘passively’, making efficient use of the sun, internal heat sources and heat recovery so that conventional heating systems are rendered unnecessary throughout even the coldest of winters. During warmer months, Passive Houses make use of passive cooling techniques such as strategic shading to keep comfortably cool. Either way, a Passive House’s high quality insulation keeps the temperature comfortable, just when t is needed.
